sullia: The eco-friendly Sneha School has become a model in Sullia with its practical rain water harvesting task. now 105 students have dug percolation pits in their households…!.
Sneha Shikshana Samsthe, an Education Society, is known for innovation in pedagogy and “beyond curriculum” programs. The president of the school Dr. Chandrashekhara Damle and Principal Jayalaxmi Damle are adept in planning something new to link the school with society. This year the school has taken up the project of spreading awareness of water harvesting in the community.
The senior student of the school Akshara Damle had an innovative idea in this regard. He gave a task to the students of 5 th to 10 th grade to dig percolation pit by themselves in their home property during first week of June 2019.
All the students took this task seriously and came up with photos of pits of 2x2x2 feet size dug by them. Thus 105 students have completed this task and the message of water harvesting to strengthen the water bodies is percolated into their households and their neighbours.
Why 2*2*2 dimension?
• First and foremost, the task that is given to the students should not appear too huge to finish.
• Secondly, the dimension would be safe for children and would not be harmful to younger kids too.
• Thirdly, it is easy to negotiate a piece of land of this dimension than a bigger one!
• Fourthly, it can be made even in the cities.
• Fifthly, instead of making one big groundwater recharge pit, it is better if multiple pits are made in different places. That will further decentralize the percolation of water.
As small step towards water conservation in Sneha school through the children will take a long leap nationwide is the dream of Akshara Damle.
